A young PR pros' aspirations for entreprenuership

Is it just me or do other young PR professionals want to start their own business? It’s exciting to look ahead and hope that some day I’ll have the knowledge, resources and support to do so.

A long-term goal of mine is to open up my own boutique PR agency or consulting firm and I constantly think about how or if this could happen. I feel like I would at least need to get a master’s degree in business or mass communication, possibly both. And have some rock-star partners (especially a stellar accountant).

One of the things I worry about is building a client base. Getting and retaining clients seems like one of the most challenging aspects of beginning a business although I’m sure there are tons of other things to worry about. Here are a list of online sources I found that might spark the interest of you future entrepreneurs.

What are your thoughts?
Current entrepreneurs: what was the hardest thing about starting your business? What do you wish you would have know before you started? What advice would you offer young PR professionals with aspirations of starting their own business?

Lord Mac Dad here!

I like where your head is at bud, you have a great outlook on great opportunity and chance, while still seeing the big picture. The important thing in your situation and current young PR/Marketing professionals like me is to seize every moment of learning experiences and soak it up. Our brains are sponges at this point, we need to absorb all information put in front of us and determine, How? Why? Benefits for our firm and for the client. What worked? What didn’t? How to improve our methods. The learning examples will prove endless.

In your previous entry “Goal setting: founding and following my PR path” you demonstrated strong character and passion for things you cherish. With your will to win attitude you can only go in one direction, and you are headed the right way.

I look forward to one day starting our own firm together, you specializing in Public Relation while I handle the Advertising and Brand Strategy.

In the meantime, continue the great and successful career at Burson-Marsteller while we both learn as much as we can over the next couple years. Then, in 7-10 years we will start…. Arman Mac Dad and associates. I will be seeing you around in a couple weeks.

All the best,

LMD
